Getting the message across
ABRSM Libretto

Libretto, the newsletter of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, is sent to music teachers all over the world. I redesigned the magazine some years ago (see 3 below for the previous design).

I see my job as that of interpreter or translator - I take the brief and raw material and work with my client to produce something which communicates the right message to the right people.

At the most basic level this can be in-house newsletters, of which I do several. Frequently the available photographs are not of brilliant quality, and editorial content can vary enormously from issue to issue. The design has to be strong enough to carry anything which is thrown at it.

Other challenges involve designing information for people whose language is not English - whether they speak using sign language or are piano students in Hong Kong who need information presented in Mandarin as well as English.

Further examples of newsletters designed for Wandsworth PCT are here.

Wands LD booklet

A booklet to tell clients of the Joan Bicknell Centre for people with learning disabilities about available services. There are three sign languages in common use, all of which use different conventions; many of our topics had no existing sign. I devised a consistent style based on the pin-men of the Makaton system, adapted so that items of clothing and other props could be included to help carry the message. Instructions for reaching the centre are for more able clients (4).
