Creative ways to Mozart

Page from Creative Ways to Mozart. The publication was bilingual (English and French), included quotes in several other languages and illustrated material of all kinds produced by the participants. It raised a number of interesting design issues.

Anvil Silcock

Book jacket for Anvil Press, an Arts Council funded poetry press. Because of cost restraints, the authors usually suggest an image, which I then use, either as it stands, or with manipulation.

I have designed for Anvil Press for a long time, producing two major re-designs of the Anvil jacket style over the past fifteen years.

My most recent project was the design of Reseo's Creative Ways to Mozart, a 64pp record of educational projects for young people in major opera houses across Europe celebrating the anniversary of Mozart's birth.

A lot of my early freelance work was in publishing, working with hot metal repro, PMTs, a large parallel motion drawing board and many tins of Cow Gum.

I designed books on photography and architecture for Bergstrom & Boyle, and fine art catalogues for Marlborough Fine Art and Frederick Mulder. I later freelanced for MacDonalds, working on jackets for popular paperback titles.

Pink numbers will open larger versions and/or more examples in a viewer window.

A Guide to the Architecture of London

A spread from A Guide to the Architecture of London by Edward Jones & Christopher Woodward, first published in 1983. The layout was done in rough using galley photo-typeset proofs. The 416pp layout had to to be as flexible as possible as the photographs were still being taken as we laid out the pages.
